Conference

The conference "Islamic textbooks and curricula in South-East Europe" will take place at the Theological Faculty of the University of Sarajevo from 22 – 24 October 2010. It aims to contribute to the religious education in Europe which can develop the Muslim integration process in Europe. The most renowned scholars in the field of education and theology are invited from 15 European countries, predominantly from South Eastern Europe.

During the conference different theological models in Europe will be considered and analysed. In related workshops specialist committees will work out alternatives. In this context, the conference will also deal with the question of which shape the contextualisation of Islam in Europe can successfully take to allow Muslim children to grow up without contradictions between their religiosity and society. The textbooks provide important information about the educational and value perception of Muslims in Europe. The conference will scrutinise the existing textbooks from South Eastern Europe and work in various workshops on further development of the existing textbooks used by Muslims for religious education. During analyses the position of human rights, equality of men and women and other universal values will be scientifically observed. The conference is intended to provide impulses for the development of a European Islamic identity in Europe which enables Muslims to identify with democratic values.

In addition, the participants of the first conference in Vienna placed great importance on the continuous exchange between Muslim scholars in Europe. The conference is intended to give them another platform for this exchange.
